I have a 9 year old pony mare we do heaps of Shows an dressage with her. She hesitates and shys (jumps quickly sideways) when she sees something new or something she's seen 1000 times.
Dressage days seemd fine as there is not much to look at and its quiter. My dressage arena at home has tyers around it and she thinks there are monsters near every one.

how do you react when she shys do you coddle her and tell her everything is ok or try to bully her into doing what you need of her.
you should be firm but gentle try lounging in the same pen does she react the same or is she getting a signal you didn't know you were sending from your seat or tension from the reins.

I would talk to your trainer in dressage......or ask her to seek a consult with another trainer for behavioral issues. However, I think if one is teaching dressage, they have advanced into behavioral issues they can work out with the horse and rider. God bless.

HI I have alot of questions in mind like how old is this horse and how long have you been riding her and how often does she get out of the arena?
Here are a few things that have worked for me. Being that you are riding dressage on this horse I can assume it is good with leg aids.
If there is something in the arena that this horse is showing fear of then you need to spend time circling near this object asking accasionaly for latteral movement, also flexing at the pole, ask the horse to stop and back, do all this with out you showing any attention to the object. Now every time you aproach start asking for your horses attention with these familur ques. It won't be long and the horse will be thinking about what you are about to ask of it and not the object, when you do pass the object do not look at it or draw you attention to your horses behavior keep on moving and your horse will build on your confidence.
