I urge caution in buying just any horse due to anxiety to own one. There are a lot of horse traders that see a person so anxious and may just "bute" a horse, drug him if he's lame, and sell you the "world's best equine" for a "real good deal". Always have the horse you are interested in VET CHECKED. Possibly x-ray those legs, because, no legs, no horse. You should be able to find a good horse at about $1200 on up, depending on type, use, training, health, whether it was shown, etc. A horse can on average be ridden about age 2, when the back development now allows a rider.
And, insure the horse once acquired if you can afford it, for it's value. I had major medical, theft, death coverage, for about $200 per yr. Prices vary, so shop around. I had Roger Peters Insurance, great people.
Please don't rush into it. It's worth the few bucks up front in knowing you have made a quality choice.

Hi Kristen,

Are you still looking for a horse? Where are you located? I'm in south central Iowa and I'm helping a friend who has an 8 year old appy gelding for sale. This horse is only 14.1 hands but is broke to ride and drive. He has been ridden in 4-H trail class, pleasure class, barrels and poles. He has been ridden on trail rides in the timber. They are wanting $1,600 for him. I also have a herd of paint horses for sale, there are about 40 head from weanling to older brood mares. If you are interested I can send you pictures and more information on any of them. Prices range fro $500 to $3,000. You can email me at tampainthorses@hotmail.com

Kristen,
Everybody is right about the fact that you need to be more careful. You're wanting a horse in general or are you wanting one to ride? How much experience do you have? I have a couple of breeding stock paint fillies that are for sale, but they're not rideable. One of them is good for a girl doing a first time training experience and the other would need a little bit more experienced trainer. Here's the info on the girls, and I'll make a good deal on selling them to you if you'd like. I'll also sell them cheap if bought together.
Name: Aella
Age: 7months old
Breed: APHA Breeding Stock Filly
This filly has some funky coloring. In the summer she's chocolate with chestnut/chocolate mane and tail, and during the winter she has a black color to her with a black/checstnut mane and tail. This filly has the most incredibly patient disposition I've seen in a while. She's not quick to trust, but once you've earned it you keep it. She lets me rub litterally all over her body, and even begs to be rubbed and petted. This baby is going to have what it takes to make it. She's got the bulldog body of a QH with a disposition to make her great for a child to work with over the years. Once she walks up to me, she stays right by my side. She'll inch close to me if I'm standing, talking to somebody hoping I'll pet her. Her registration is pending, and she's futurity nominated. Just her father's bloodlines include AzureTe, Three Bars, Poco Bueno, and Sonny Dee Bar. Just think...That's just her father!!! This baby has a huge hip and is about the size of a yearling. She already halters, leads, trailers, grooms, round pens, lets me catch her, and learns more daily. I'm working on sacking her more every day, and it just amazes me how quickly she learns. I can handle her feet, and neither her nor her sister are head shy. She's had all her shots and wormed. I'll continue working with her until she's sold, and I'm willing to work on a payment contract including continuing with training. I’ll make a great deal if they’re sold together.
Name: Sassy
Age:5 months
Breed: APHA Breeding Stock Filly
This baby is going to have what it takes to make it. She's got the bulldog body of a QH with a spunky and eager to please personality. This little girl nickers to me everytime that I go out to see her. She's always the first one to walk up to me, and the one making sure to be following close behind me. Her registration is pending, and she's futurity nominated. Just her father's bloodlines include AzureTe, Three Bars, Poco Bueno, and Sonny Dee Bar. Just think...That's just her father!!! This baby has a huge hip and is about the size of a filly 2-3 months older. She already halters, leads, trailers, grooms, round pens, lets me catch her, and learns more daily. I'm working on sacking her more every day, and it just amazes me how quickly she learns. I can handle her feet, and she should be able to be shod by the time she's sold. She's had all her shots and wormed. I'll continue working with her until she's sold, and I'm willing to work on a payment contract including continuing with training. I'm willing to sell both for a good deal.
Let me know what you think. Good luck
