I have two three year old geldings that I keep on my property and love them both dearly. However, I do not ride! We frequently go for walks in hand in a nearby park and people are always asking me why I'm walking. Truth is I find riding stressful and prefer just to spend time with my horses. Is there anyone out there in the world like me? IP: Logged |

I got that way in the end, when I'd had enough of my horse "spooking" at garbage cans, leaves, stuff like that, irregardless of how much riding on trails, which IS pleasure riding, etc, we'd done. Just got tired of that occasional muscle flutter, standing still and breathing hotly until all-checked-out thing. My younger daredevil ways had ended, no more gymkana riding for me, I was now a growing old mom who wanted her feet firmly planted. Nothing wrong with that I figured, my friends were becoming the same way, so we hung out at the barn enjoying the younger set! I GAVE lessons in my youth....showed some too.....I just grew tired of dealing with a horse, the work. I never said I didn't have a "seat" or couldn't manage, just that I wanted a different life style! God bless. [This message has been edited by Pauline (edited 01-23-2003).] IP: Logged |

i'm 26 and drive horses proffesionally in the summer but the part i crave most in the summer when i'm away from them in the winter is grooming. the smell of a harm horse the sparkle of a well groomed coat it just feels good to be around them. what type are you into. i enjoy them all. some horses due to injury can't be ridden you would be a good adoption owner for them. my freinds gelding took paint of the yr quite a while ago but never went under saddle he's almost 10 now and has epilepsy or something like that he rears when he has a sezior and will never be ridden so he's a big furry lawn ornimement along with his almost 40 yr old mom. If what you're doing makes you happy then keep it up. Your horse is still being exercised and while some people might see not riding as unusual, it really isn't. I think the people who really love their horses and are committed to them are the people who have a bond between themselves and their pets. If you have that bond then what you are doing is right. You know though if you want your horses to be ridden, or if your horses want to be ridden, maybe you could find someone around the town to ride them as well as your walks. Horses are a great addition to a young adults life and taking care of a horse really impacts their life. If you can handle sharing your horse then maybe you should consider getting someone to ride your horses for you, especially if you have a small pasture. But keep up just having fun. IP: Logged |

Hey, if it makes you happy and stress free and your horses as well, than keep it up girl! Horses can be stressful to a rider who has certain fears of riding. What ever you enjoy doing , go for it! IP: Logged |

Oh I love to ride and walk. Sassy used to get down on her knees for me so i could get on easier. She's older now and can't do it as well, but we still go for trailrides weekly. She's fixing to go to her new home this weekend. I've moved out of the house and baught a place with my BF of 5 1/2 yrs so that my grandfather can move in with my mother. Granny died about 3wks ago, so he doesn't want to be alone now. But She'll really like her new home, and I can't wait for those long walks!!! IP: Logged |

Hey, it's not all about riding! It's about companionship and caring-if hand-walking is what you like to do-hand walk 'em. If you feel closest to horses when your grooming-groom 'em. There are alot of horses that can't be ridden anymore due to age or infirmity-and alot of folks who can't ride for the same reasons-sounds like a match made in heaven to me! IP: Logged |

I know a friend that has about 4 horses but she doesn't ride them alot cuz she give free riding lessons to beginners that love horses but doesn't have enough money to pay for real horse lessons. IP: Logged |

Riding is a blast, but the true bonds form in the daily routine. My new mare isn't ready to be ridden yet, and we enjoy walking the trails together for a couple hours a day as a coolout after her lunging session. She's really blossemed from the skittish human-hating horse I got now that she's learning not everybody is going to hurt her. I used to spend hours lying in the field with my gelding when I had just him on the property, before I moved him to a bigger facility. There's a lot more to be gained from the simple things.
