I am contemplating getting a shovelnose cat for my 46G. It currently holds; 4 cory cats, 2 glass cats, 7 gouramis,1 black ghost, 3 varieties of plecos, clown knife, and 2 black fin columbians. I am a little concerned about the glass cats and the cory's because of their size, however the other alternative is to place it in a 30G tall, with a large goby, an elephant nose, leaf fish, 2 rope fish and an electric blue crayfish. Where do you think it would be better suited tankmate-wise and size wise?
I'd hate for there to any casualities, especially if they can be avoided.

Thanks!

Your tanks are severely overstocked and you have fish that aren't compatible. Here's a quick rundown:

Cory cats - you need to alot at least 2 gallons/fish so that's 8 gallons
Glass cats - 3 gallons/fish
gouramis - what kind of gouramis? If they're dwarf (smallest kind), you would need about 30 gallons just for the 7 of them.
black ghost knife - this guy can get up to 18" so he'll need at least 75 gallons.
plecos - again, what kind of plecos? If they're common plecos, they can get over 12" so they need at least 55 gallons.
clown knife - can get over 3 feet long so it will need a HUGE tank that is at least 3 feet wide and 6 feet long.
columbian catfish - this is a brackish/saltwater fish. As an adult, it cannot survive in a freshwater tank.

Goby - what kind? Most gobies are brackish/saltwater.
Elephant nose - can get around 10" so it will need at least a 45 gallon tank.
Leaf fish - should be in a species only tank
Rope fish - can get about 20" long and needs at least a 75 gallon tank.
crayfish - can get 12" and IMO, it's not wise to mix large crustaceans and fish because chances are the fish will get eaten.

I suggest getting rid of fish or buying more tanks. Do not buy any more fish.

Just make sure not to get that shovelnose cat because it could really throw everything off. Many problems can arise in an aquarium by last minute additions. If your fish get along, and your parameters are okay, then why add more?

Chelle has good points, and if these are new tanks be careful! You could really have some problems down the road.

Anyways, take care.

That's me...obsessive/compulsive. Everyone has been getting along quite well so far. The largest fish is the black ghost, which is apprx. 8". The clown knife is +/- 6",the gourami's are not the dwarf type and appear to be the most aggressive, however only to each other. The plecos are made up of 1 asian spot or gold nugget (not sure)and 1 cocoa. There's the bango, the cory and glass who all keep to themselves, as well as the columbians, which are +/- 5". I test my water bi-weekly and use an Emperor 400 on the 46G. The 30G tall has a Casade 300, which is not so great. I plan on changing it out sometime soon. The goby is a purple-spotted. Anyway, you have all answered my question. I guess the shovelnose will have to wait. In the meantime everything will remain status quo. until I go tank shopping again. Thanks for the advice.
