Allen- you con put zero in a freshwater 45gallon tank. they will only live for a few months 6or7 maybe less, maybe more. generally they will only get about 6-8 inches in freshwater and then die. they would need to be acclimated to a marine tank after they were about 5 inches. at the latest. but if you think its fare to the fish to shorten its life span by several years, you could put 1-3 in a tank depending on how many other fish you have. cichlids do very well with the columbians b/c the columbians are so peaceful. they may get picked on a little but i've never had that problem. i had a few pairs of fire mouths, river cichlids and a demond fish(earth eater), sevrums, urus (sp) stuff like that. write back if you have any questions or anything. well like i said, you can add salt but thats not really going to help the columbians...they need to be fully marine. but yes, the firemouths can have SOME salt. like a tablespoon per 10gallons. but no more. also if you firemouths breed your columbians will eat the babies and then the firemouth parents could kill the shark. otherwise there shouldn't be any problems.
