Hello again. I've decided I will be picking up two possibly three german rams tomorrow, I will be giving my M. Auratus (he's been getting too big and doesn't have much room to swim any way) to them so the rams can live in my ten gallon. I'm thinking of getting two and then maybe a school of six cardinals to go with them.

But I've been researching rams and everything I come across says they need soft water with a PH of 5 or 6. My ph is about 7.3, so I thought I could add some peat to my filter to lower it. Does anyone have experience with this? Can I just add regular peat moss like I would use in my garden?

Thanks,

Tina

i've never heard of this process???? you may just want to try buying water from a pet store or something. it's not very expensive. but if you are using tap water you could try to let you water rest in a bucket in between water changes. but i suggest buying water...
although if you added a little bit of salt to the tank you should also be ok. probably like a table spoon or so.

Hi, make sure there is no added fertilizer in the peat and you should be ok, it will give your water a brown tinge though and i'm not sure how long it will take for it to alter your ph that much, goodluck.

The fluval cannister filter has the option for adding a peat bag that is safe for fish. If you don't have a fluval, it's okay... They sell those (safe for fish) bags of peat. I don't know what type of filter you run but if you put this bag behind your mechanical filtratioin, it would work.

Regular peat moss for the garden has little white balls. These are time released fertilizers and I wouldn't use that in the aquarium.

Ok, so I've been doing more research and the general consensus seems to be that if you have neutral ph they should be ok. Mine is on the high end of neutral so I'm hoping for the best. I'm going to get three and add my two remaining otocinclus (they drop like flies!) and hopefully we'll live happily ever after. Thanks for your help!
