I have a 8 1/2 inch Oscar and a 10 inch Pleco. I am planning on getting them a bigger tank, but I'd like to know what the odds are of adding any more fish without my Oscar having a nice dinner. If I can put more fish then I will get a larger tank than if i cannot so it is affecting my decision.

try a rope fish ( reed fish) they are so ugly they are cute. plus they have great personalities...mostly because they are really bad at seeing but if they get frightened they may jump out so make sure you have a good top. and don't buy a baby rope fish either...but i'm sure you know that. also a good fish to have is a good size needle nosed gar or a shovle nose cat fish. these are very fun fish too. but you could pretty much get anything that won't fit in the oscar's mouth. as long as they are compatable.

What size tank are you planning on getting?

Really, a lot will depend on the temperment of your oscar. If you've never tried introducing any other fish to him, there's no telling how he will react to a new roommate.

Personally, I would recommend against a rope fish. They are long & thin and will probably get eaten fairly easily. If you do get something else, I would recommend a few silver dollars or another bottom feeder (depending on the size of your tank). I would avoid other cichlids because you are more likely to have aggression issues with them.

Also, make sure whatever you get is too big to fit in your oscar's mouth. I tried adding a couple 2 1/2" tinfoil barbs to my oscar tank a while back (both oscars were about 7"). The barbs lasted about 15 seconds.

I would like to get somewhere between a 80 gallon and 150 gal. I do not know what all he has been exposed to. I got him from the pet store in October of last year and he was pretty messed up then (missing both side fins, and most of his tail and bottom fim were chewed off.) He has never acted agressive towards my pleco, in fact it has been the other way around. And I am having no luck at trying to vent him, any holes that might be there are sucked up in like a crater.
