I desire live plants but prefer not to have pressurized co2 setup. Right now with 3 small children I dont have too much excess time on my hands. I have never kept aquatic plants and my knowledge is from my readings on this forum and a few books. What plants can I keep healthy with my current setup? Basic water condition is good (ammonia, nitrite, pH). My kit does not test for nitrates and trace elements. I have a 55g tank that has been established since december 17 2003 with the following specs: Lighting: Filtration: Heaters: Substrate: Fish Load: Current plants: Fertilizer: Scott IP: Logged |

Yeast CO2 generators are likely too small for a 55 gallon and are higher maintenance than pressurized CO2. Once it's set up, you should only have to change the CO2 cartrisge every 6-12 months. The biggest obstacle is that it can be some costly. Everything else looks OK. If adding flourite, to keep the expense down I'd just add it to the substrate around the plants themselves. Unless you have demanding plants, the iron from the fertiliser is probably sufficient - but flourite won't hurt. You can also get nutrient spikes to put in the gravel near the plants roots. I've mixed mine in with the gravel over the whole tank, but I've only got a 20 gallon. IP: Logged |
