Hi y'all! Just wondered if anyone could help me. It is terribly difficult to decypher the sex of Oscars, does anybody know an effect way of telling wether I have a little 'boy' oscar, or a little 'girl' oscar? Any suggestions would be appreciated IP: Logged |

You can try venting them. Look at their reproductive openings. Males should look like this (head oo tail) and females should look like this (head oO tail). However, the difference isn't always apparent so unless you have some experience, it will be difficult to tell for sure. The only other way is to actually witness a successful spawning and see which one lays the eggs (but sometimes 2 females will go through the spawning ritual so the eggs have to end up fertilized or else you can't say for sure that the other oscar was male). Also, females will have a larger breeding tube with a blunt end while males will have a smaller breeding tube with a pointed end. -Chelle IP: Logged |
