I remember reading something a while back about "fasting" your fish. The idea is that since fish don't eat everyday in the wild, that it is unnatural and unhealthy to feed them every day in a tank. The gist of the article was that one day a week, you should not feed your fish at all, therefore somewhat mimicing what they experience in the wild and giving you healthier, longer-lived fish.

Has anyone else ever heard of this? One of the main reasons so many people are overweight these days is because evolution has not caught up with lifestyle. Food has never been as available as it is today (at least in first-world countries) and our bodies are wired for a feast/famine cycle so we pack on the pounds because we never have a famine cycle to shed them. Could the same thought be applied to fishes?

Is the "feed twice a day" mantra just a conspiracy by Hikari to sell more fish food?

Has anyone else heard of "fasting" your fish? Does anyone else practice it?

People generally tend to feed their fish to much and that can foul the water. The idea is that you can feed a lot to your fish, just a little at a time. I usually will forget to feed my fish at least twice a week. Nothing bad really ever comes from this. The tank at the school where I teach at does not get fed over the weekends and holidays. The fishes always seem very eager to eat, and the water is always crystal clear.

I guess the choice is yours!
