Yes, oscars will over eat. Plus, when they've had their fill, the tend to still take pellets, chew them up, then spit them out which adds to the waste in the tank and can lead to poor water quality.

I would suggest starting out by feeding the oscar one pellet at a time and when they start spitting the pellets back out, stop. After a while, you should be able to tell how many pellets they will eat in one sitting. I also suggest only feeding them about 3 times a day.

Fish in the wild can go days without eating so evolution has hard-wired it into them that when food is available they eat as much as they can. A fish is essentialy a wild animal kept in a cage and will behave like one. So, yes, oscars will overeat if you overfeed. And, because their exercise is limited in a tank, they will get overweight too, which will shorten their lives.

First of all, you shouldn't be giving them feeder fish. They contain very little nutritional value, are a great way to introduce diseases to your tank, and the scales can't be digested properly so they're either spit out which will make your tank dirty or they are swollowedn which can cause an intestinal blockage and kill your oscars.

Stick with feeding pelleted food like I described. And occasionally give them treats like worms or crickets but only give them 2 or 3 at a time.

How big is your oscar? How big is your tank? What kind of filter do you have?
