What are your water parameters (ammonia, nitrIte, nitrAte)?
What size tank & what filtration?
How long has the tank been set up & was it correctly cycled before adding fish?
Could you maybe post a picture of the greenish gunk?

First of all that tank is WAY too small for either one of those fish, let alone both. If you want to keep them you're going to need at least a 55 gallon tank soon. If you can't get one in the next month or so, it would be best to return the fish.

I'm still not sure what the gunk could be, but my best guess is it's related to poor water quality. As soon as you can, go out and buy test kits for ammonia, nitrIte, and nitrAte then test your water and post the results here. And in the mean time, I would suggest doing some water changes because it's likely that those readings are off the scale and the fish is getting poisoned.
