Does anyone know a sure fire way to tell the sex of an oscar.

the only way i kno is that you have to watch them breed. i dont think ther is any other way that is 100%.

There are basically 3 ways to tell the sex of oscars. One is to witness a successful spawning. Note, however, that sometimes 2 females will go through the spawning ritual, so just because you see one lay eggs, it doesn't necessarily mean the other one is a male. They actually have to produce fertilized eggs. Another way is a necropsy, but that's not recommended for obvious reasons. And you can also vent the fish (compare the size/shape of their reproductive openings). But with oscars, the difference isn't very apparent so it generally takes a bit of practice to be able to consistently come up with the correct sex.

thanks for the info i'll try to get a closer look. I have a red about 9" and a tiger about 7" i bought them both at the same time and the same size, when they were 1". Quite the interesting fish.
