I have a 3 yr. old goldfish in a 10 gallon tank that I keep in our daughters room. Three days ago my dog came into the living room with the fish in her mouth. Obviously, the goldfish(Bob) had jumped out of the tank and landed on the floor. Bob was still breathing so I put him back in the tank, he sank to the bottom and after about a minute some air bubbles came out and it almost looked like he spit up; after that he began swimming around again. But since then he has lost some scales (continuously),he is turning pale, and the outer edges of fins and tail are ragging. He will not come to surface to eat but will eat as it sinks to him. There were a few minor abrasions where the dog picked him up but no major cuts. If anyone can help us PLEASE let us know what we can do!!! THANK YOU!!! IP: Logged |

Adding Melafix will help any cuts heal. Are his fins torn or do they look like they're infecting and/or rotting? I'm not entirely sure about the scales falling off, but my guess is after being in a dog's mouth, he probably has a bacterial infection. It would probably be a good idea to add an antibiotic like Maracyn two (does anyone know if it's okay to use Maracyn two with Melafix?) Other than that, just make sure his water parameters are good and hope for the best. -Chelle IP: Logged |

No, missing scales are a sign that something is wrong. Either there's some sort of infection or the fish is injuring itself on a tank decoration. -Chelle IP: Logged |
