I had a 40 gallon tank. So im sure that was great for 60 tiny guppies.

40 gallons is only good for about 20 gupys.... of any size

Cichlids small jaws is right. In one of the LPS there were 2 inch long guppies. gotta remember that fish are sold very young most of the time, so they will grow. You need to leave room for them in their tank.
