I bought some weights for my live plants today and it says on the package they are made of lead. I remember reading in another thread that it was illegal in CA to make these out of lead. I live in CA and don't want to put actual lead in my tank. Do you guys think they really are lead or is it sorta like pencil lead, they call it lead but its really something else like graphite? Thanks, I don't wanna get lead poisoning to hold some plants down. Somehow, I just don't think its worth it!

Hi tina1, Sorry they most likely are real lead. Even the narrow bands that are usually wrapped around the base of live plants in the pet shops are real lead.

I guess that means they're harmless if you don't keep them on too long. I just wanted them to hold down some new plants that haven't formed many good roots yet. Thanks for the info kc5gvn!

hmmm...when you buy plants are you supposed to remove the lead weights when you put them in the tank? I thought thats what the lead weights were for-- to weigh down the plants until the roots have established...good question Tina
(and thanks for the info. on aquarium salt- my molly's eye is doing much better!)

I usually don't remove the weights until the plants have become established well enough that pieces won't float to the top. One of my newer plants has pieces that keep escaping it's existing weight, but the new ones are holding it together. The ones from the pet store just don't seem like they're made from a metal, they're soft. These that I bought out of a box at the store are definitely metal.

You should NOT put anything made from lead in your tanks! If you know or even think that it could be lead take it out.

the reason they still use lead is its cheap, heavy, and bendable it sucks yes just like the stainless steel hooks

I don't know anything about a Chinese market but there are two pet stores here that I like:

1. Gaiser Pets: A nice, honest and friendly staff. The store is very clean, although items tend to be a little expensive. I was in there the other day over half the tanks had post its on them that said "Ick". I was just shocked that they took the time to let the customers know. Most pet stores will just sell you the sick fish. Also, they will generally tell you how large a fish will get before you buy it. A clerk there really didn't want me to buy my clown loaches because he told me they would get over 1 foot long. Its nice to see honest sales people!

2. Fins and Feathers: Not a bad store. It is kindy gross looking and the tanks never look that great but their fish ALWAYS live. They also have a great 14 day guarantee. If you can get over the nastyness of the store they have some neat stuff. The staff isn't that great and don't seem to be too knowledgeable but I like this store just for the fact that I know my fish will live (I think the fish get used to the gross conditions at the store and love the nice conditions at my house! and maybe that's why they always live).

Both of these stores are located on Plumas Street in Yuba City. And just for the record: I wish I had a Petsmart! I would save soooooo much money!
