I have 2 red tiger oscars, one named Barley and the other Hops, I've had them only about 7 months, and they are only about 8 months old, and the bigger one, Barley seems to be fighting a lot with Hops, his scales on his sides are all torn off, and his fins have damage. And Hops wont seem to fight back, he just kinda stays in the corner all day. Is this normal? IP: Logged |

They are getting territorial and Barley is the dominant fish. What size is the tank? -Chelle IP: Logged |

Yeah I only have a 15 gallon tank, and when I bought the oscars they were only babies and I had in mind that i was going to get about a 75 gallon by the time they got a little bigger but i have been moving around residences about every 6 months and moving a tank that big that often is a pain. 15 gallons isn't nearly big enough for oscars. How big are they? Normal, healthy oscars should grow about 1"/month. At about 8 months old, they should be 7" - 8". I have a feeling they're probably closer to about 4" which is SEVERELY stunted and VERY unhealthy for the fish. Not to mention a 15 gallon tank simply cannot handle the bioload of those two fish. What are your water parameters (ammonia, nitrIte, and nitrAte)? My guess is they are of the scale and poisoning the fish. I suggest getting the 75 gallon (or bigger) tank NOW (they really needed it about 4 months ago). If you can't or are unwilling to do so, the best thing for the fish would be to find new homes for them now and get fish that are more suitable for a 15 gallon tank. I know it sounds harsh, but it is simply impossible for an oscar (let alone 2) to live a full, happy life in such a small tank. -Chelle IP: Logged |
