I started breeding guppies a year aago and then stopped and left them all in the same cage now i have guppies comin out of my ears. i gave the babies to the fish store and they keep producing more. i dont want to flush them to stop the reproduction. IP: Logged |

so are u trying to figure out how to stop the reproduction? if so, remove the male or female that keeps producing the fry and put it in another aquarium or give it back to the LFS. IP: Logged |

Yup, basically your only choice is to only keep one sex. If you keep the females, they can still have a few more batches of fry even with the males gone, but if you get rid of all the fry soon enough, the females will eventually stop giving birth. -Chelle IP: Logged |

be really careful though. if you keep all females and add even one male you'll get crazy babies again. female guppies can carry unferilized babies for up to 6 months. i have a 15 gallon with 4 females and one male but i keep newts to keep the baby population under control. the newts don't eat the babies often but just enough.so maybe get a newt or 2. they are cool to watch neway. Hate to say this but get to know someone with larger fish. They will be more than happy to help you in that area you might be able to make some money and help some one out. IP: Logged |

take away any plants or anything that the babies are hiding in and the parents will just eat them as they come out, its cruel but its life. IP: Logged |

Could you advertise them in the newspaper? I'm sure someone would love to have them. To bad your not in Arkansas. My DD loses almost everyone she buys but now has about 30 babies and still wants more! IP: Logged |

You could always start a carnivore tank and use the guppies as feeders. A single Jack Dempsey in a 30-40 gal tank would work. I don't know if this is more "humane" than flushing them, but it seems more "circle of life" if you will. I'm not totally sure, but I think that water temperature has an effect on breeding but I don't know if higher/lower temps encourage/discourage reproduction. Otherwise, separating the males and females is really your only option to stop reproduction. Life finds a way - Ian Malcom IP: Logged |
