Hi everyone. Yesterday was my son's 4th birthday...(Leap baby). I have a 20L tank in my dining room that is cycled and ready to go, I just wasn't sure what I wanted to put in it. My step-daughter decided to buy her brother his own fish for the tank. (obviously I am caring for it). She bought a male and female peacock cichlids. I don't know a thing about them except that they like a higher ph, which is great cause my water out of tap is 8.2. Any information will be helpful, and I mean any!!!! He loves them....Max and Ruby....those of you who have preschoolers, know Max and Ruby LOL
Thanks a million

You may want to take them back and get a betta for that tank. Two peacock cichlids will eventually require a much larger tank as they can get 6" each (depending on species and sex). A five gallon tank isn't big enough.

If you do decide to get a bigger tank, they like hard, high PH water. You can do this with coral substrate sand. Also, make sure there is at least one cave per cichlid in the tank.

I think she meant it's a 20 gallon long tank (I hate that "L" abbreviation for long). But even then the 20 gallon is going to be pushing it.

Here's some good info on peacocks: http://fish.mongabay.com/peacock_cichlids.htm
