Well, I just spent a day shopping at Big Al's and I have noticed my friends just don't share the same excitement as I do when it comes to fish!...lol I bought a Big air pump for a 4 ft bubble wall, 2 glass fish and 4 plants. IT LOOKS SO AMAZING!!!!!!! I called my friends to come and see it and they think I am mental....lol One question...can you over oxygenate a tank?? I am going back to stare at my aquarium again...lol bye! IP: Logged |

Basically there is not cheap/easy test to tell how much oxygen you have in your water. One of the biggest factors when it comes to oxygenating your tank is surface agitation. The bubble walls do not necessarily do a great job of adding more oxygen to your tank. However any HOB filter will do a great job of adding oxygen to your water. All you need is to have ripples at the top of the tank and you are adding a good deal of oxygen to your tank. Similarily with your fluval 304 if the spray bar is an inch or two below the water pointed up at a 45 degree angle so that you get some good ripples on the surface you should not have to worry about your tank being too low on oxygen. I am not sure what a HOB filter is (sorry). All I know is I bought a 4 ft. bubble curtain and an optima air pump. Is it advised to leave the air pump on all the time or is it okay to unplug it when I go to bed etc? I was under the understanding that it was basically for aesthetics mostly and if it added oxygen to the water - then all the better. Call me crazy (my friends are..lol) but I think my fish look happier with all of the plants and bubbles. IP: Logged |

LOL Your not losing it your just hooked like many others and myself. I am currently looking to move because I need more room for more tanks. Living in an old farm house the floors won't support a large enough tank to satisfy me. LOL Man I've got it bad. ------------------ IP: Logged |

HOB filter is hang over the back or some call it hang on the back. They use an empeler and an intake tube that overflows the water back into the tank. The ones with bio wheels are the best. When you go to change out your cartrige you don't loose all you bacteria. ------------------ IP: Logged |

Yep....Gr8fuljames....sounds to me like you have it bad...LOL How big are your aquariums? I know what you mean by the "moving" because of not enough space or the floors. My floors are okay however I am considering buying another tank (definitley need a isolation tank) and I was just telling a friend today that I would like another one but really big- much bigger than my 55 gallon. I think a 110 or 120 gallon would be great- the length of the back of a couch! Live and learn I suppose. I have a HOB filter but it is not a bio-wheel...I have a Aqua 500. Oh-well, I now know for next time...lol IP: Logged |

Seven in all, three 55's one 20 long and one 20 hex two 10's one of which is isolation tank. I had a 30 but gave it to my father in law to house his angels. ------------------ IP: Logged |

*wave* from Calgary I love Big Al's! They actually know what they are talking about when I go in with questions I recently gave them my 6" RBP for a credit. I'm happy they will find him a good home. [This message has been edited by Caldinye (edited 02-29-2004).] IP: Logged |

Fishybiz, Don't worry because only about 4 out of 10 people will actually stop and look at an aquarium. Then, only 1 out of the 4 will have something nice to say. If it's a child they will even ask you where Nemo is. If you like the tank and it provides you with enjoyment, then you are a success. There may be a fish keepers club at you Local fish store that may give you some friends to share your excitement with. Multiple Tank Syndrome is the only downfall. I have 8 tanks with everything from guppies to severums. Regular people think I am crazy. Bubble walls will make you fishes more active and they are very nice to look at. Keep your head up and take care! IP: Logged |

yep..lol..youre exactly right. I had a 2 and a 4 year old ask me about Nemo. They ask me everytime they come over why I dont have one and when will I be getting one. I dont think they quite grasp the salt vs. freshwater concept yet. They however will sit and watch the aquarium longer than my friends will. I was looking at a 10 gallon today while I was buying fish medication and I think that might be added to my list for when I get my tax return back. Thanks for the post! Hi Caldinye in Calgary!! Big Al's is great! I wish they were a little closer to me as it takes me about 45 min to get there by car. It is impossible for me to get there by bus so I usually take a list of items I need when I do go. It is really easy to spend a lot of money in there I find! I am sure they will find your RB's a good home IP: Logged |

To answer the question: No, you can't over oxygenate a tank. Once the water reaches saturation levels, it will release excess oxygen to the atmosphere (the actual ppm at saturation varies considerably with temperature). If you have live plants and you see them producing "beads" of air under the leaves, you know that your at 100% saturation. With photo-synthesis it is possible to have super-saturated waters, but they are neither harmful nor likely common in an aquarium where the ratio of depth to turbulence is usually low. IP: Logged |

Hey Katanas_edge, Have you considered posting pics of your aquarium? You seem to know a lot about them- I bet they are amazing! IP: Logged |

Thank-you for the compliment. Actually, all I have is a 10 gallon of tetras (that I bought as a "present" for my wife in September) and a 20 gallon that I got Christmas of 2002 (14 months approx.) that has goldfish. I plan on getting a much larger tank, likely one in the 55 gallon range and another in the 110-130 gallon range in the next year or two but it's not practical right now (ie: I'll have big fish tanks and no wife ). We are planning a move soon, so when we have a house and I have my big tanks I'll put them on. I'll put my other tanks up as soon as I can, but they're probably not anything people will oooh over.
