I did post this message a few days ago with out any response. Please if anyone knows how to stop this, could you let me know.
It grows on the rocks and glass and plants.

I'm also wondering if algee remover would be a good idea to put in the tank.

how big is your tank? what fish? and how many?
maybe you could add a small oto to clean that up. is your tank in direct sun light?
if it comes to it just scrub it all off and clean your decorations. how often do you do tank matanence?

The tank right now with the "black hair" algee is about 40-50 gal and my other tank is about 70-80 gal.
they both have had the problem.

i have a rainbow, a molly,a platey, and a angle, a frog and a pleco in the tank with the problem.
No the tank is not in direct sunlight.
And i clean my tank about once a month.

well ill tell you now you should be doing weekly water changes and gravel vacumes. each time taking 25-30% of the water out and adding new water. the only chemical you should have to add is de chloronizer. how long are your lights on for?

I knew someone with this same problem. This is commonly called black brush or black beard algea. They tried everything from water changes leaving the lights out to even breaking down the tanks and cleaning everything. Nothing worked they finally gave up trying to eliminate it and just controlled it by scraping and the such. Then year and a half later they moved and cleaned tanks when they did. The algea went away at the new house. I have a theory that this is not normal algea and is either introduced into the tank through live plants or in the case of the people I know through their water supply. When they moved and cleaned there tanks the different water supply did not carry this algea. None of their clean up fish would touch this stuff and "Algea fix" was uneffective. Did you add any new plants to this tank?
