hey, i have a 60 gallon long and i was wondering if oscars are better off alone or with another one of their kind. the one i currently have is about 1 1/2 inches long. do oscars tend to show more personality towards humans when they are alone or does it not matter? thanx.

Hi. It is so nice to see someone that actually cares about the fish. Being that you have a 60 long, I would no add another oscar....if you wanted 2, you would need atleast a 75 gallon. I would just leave well enough alone. Good luck

if you wanted another tank mate i would sugest something that gets to be around 6-7 inches or is an odd shape so it cant be swallowed. usaly oscars are jst big push overs so yuou dont want an overly agresive fish to be a tank mate. some sugesgions that come to mind would be a convict or serverum maybe. it all realy depends on your oscars territorial issues

no, i have 2 oscars in a 30 gallon, (soon to be a 75g) but they would do fine in a 60 gallon, it wouldnt be luxury but it probably would be happier with a friend. but oscars will get up to 12 inches long so be prepaired.

From what I know, oscars don't care if they ever have a tank mate. More food for them I guess. IMO, 60 gallons is absolute minimum for a single full grown oscar (12"), 110-125 for a pair of full grown. Every fish is different, you have to experiment to find what fish will fit with your fish. Oscars require lots of space, lack of space will bring you big problems.

Hope this helps!

I would definitely not recommend 2 oscars in a 60 gallon tank. As far as bioload goes, a 75 is the BARE MINIMUM for 2 oscars. However, that ONLY works if the 2 oscars get along, which doesn't happen very often.

For a 60, I would recommend the one oscar and maybe a couple of nice bottom dwellers like plecos or pictus cats. Or you might be able to get away with a few silver dollars or giant danios.

The bare minimum for one oscar is 55 gallons. However, keep in mind that that's the BARE MINIMUM and bigger is always better. The main problem with an oscar in a 55 gallon tank is the standard 55 gallon is 12 inches wide whereas a full grown oscar can get over 14 inches long not including the tail. A 75 gallon tank really isn't that much more expensive and it will give you an additional 6 inches of width plus 20 more gallons of water which means the nitrAtes will take longer to build up (ie fewer and/or smaller water changes).
