I have a 10 gal that has incandesent lights (sorry about the spelling). the bulbs that came with the hood are way too hot, it's really hard to control the temperature with out having to turn the lights out on the poor fish.
i've seen there are several different types you can buy for an aquarium, so, does anyone have any advice on what type/color/watt would be a good one to try?
thanks in advance!

I had the same problem!! What I did was I got a desk lamp (The kind that clips on to the side of the desk) I got a florescent light bulb and it doesn't get very hot at all! I hope that this helps you!

They make flourescent replacement bulbs for aquariums that fit in regular incandescent sockets and don't get as hot. I got one in the fish dept at Walmart.

Yay...
I'm glad you asked that question Fabbyfishies because I have a similar one...
I just bought 2 aquatic plants- a hornwort and a fernwort (camboda)...I have read that they need moderate lighting...I have a 55-gallon with a 30 w flourescent bulb - does anyone know if this is okay?
Thanks everyone )

fabbyfishies, if you can not find a flourescent to replace it you might be able to get a lower watt incandesent. I have incandesent bulbs in my ten gal. betta tank with no problems the heater still has to turn on to keep the water 78. I don't have the original bulbs as they were colored and I didn't like how they looked.
