While hunting for sustrate I cam across some natural crushed red lava rock (about 1" in size) at Home Depot. I would like to know if anyone has information (or experience) on this and what effect (good or bad) that it would have on a freshwater aquarium?

Hi Tim, As far as any tank contamination the Lava rock is okay. The problem with lava rock is that it has very sharp edges and your fish can get scraped on it pretty badly.
