I've got a 33 gallon tank, running an aquaclear 300, and in the next few weeks, I'm going to buy an extra filter, with bio wheel, to complement the ac300, I'm probably gonna get the penguin 170, so I'll be turning over approx. 470 gph, I was wondering how this will affect the stocking level on my tank. I've currently got 3x bloodfin tetra, 3x head and tail light tetra, 3x albino glowlight tetra, 3x ekei rasboras (about .5 inch max each), 1 weather loach, 1 flounder, 1 albino cory, 1 hong kong pleco (2 inches max), 1 angel, 1 ghost cat( max approx. 6 inches) I am wondering if this is over stocked, or once I add the extra filter, if I will be able to add any more, I would prefer a med. sized fish, (4-8 inches max) if anyone has any suggestions that would be compatable with my current stock, that'd be great. I'm not sure what my water parameters are yet, I will be testing on monday, but temp is steady at 77, except on the weekend, it drops to 75, I dont like that, but there's nothing I can do about it right now, ( it has to do with the ambient house temp drops during the weekend, from about 70 farenheit, to about 60) IP: Logged |

Oddfish, Filtration is great, however it has No effect on stocking levels. It will, however, keep your tank looking cleaner between water changes. I would say that 18 fishes in a 33 gallon tank is a lot of fish. Especially when one of them is a catfish and the other is an angel. These two can get pretty large. Adding a 4 to 8 inch fish would not be a good idea and would put you over the limit. Angelfish are very territorial and don't take well to newcomers in the tank (especially large ones). Get yourself a heater, as rising and falling temps. can really stress fishes out and invite disease (ich). Test your water parameters. Just out of curiosity, how long has the tank been running? Anyways, good luck to you! [This message has been edited by Hooben (edited 02-22-2004).] IP: Logged |

Your tank is a bit overstocked right now so I wouldn't add any more. The extra filtration will handle the ammonia produced by all those fish, but the end result is nitrAte. By having so many fish in a somewhat small amount of water, the nitrAtes will build up pretty quickly and you will probably end up needing to do water changes every few days. Also, is that some special species of flounder? Because the only flounders I know of get quite large so you may eventually need to find a new home for it. Also, your weather loach is going to end up getting 12" which is too big for a 33 gallon tank. I would suggest looking into a bigger tank for these guys. That would leave the 33 gallon just slightly overstocked, but with the extra filtration and frequent water changes, you could probably make it work, but don't add any more fish. -Chelle IP: Logged |

I've got a heater, and thats what helps keep it stable during the week, it has to do with that when my dad comes up on the weekend, I have to turn the furnace down to 60, and run the fireplace super hot, which doesnt get any heat around the house, only in the tiny room its in. I've had the tank up and running approx. 3 weeks. And for a bigger tank, I would love a bigger tank, but I cant afford to go bigger for a few reasons, 1. I am going to be moving out into an apartment or duplex this summer, I know a duplex I would be able to get bigger, but if I go into an apartment, I am only allowed a certain size of tank, or else the weight of it is too much, and I had asked around, but nobody was able to tell me what a safe size would be, as this was before I was directed to this site, so I went for a 33, cause I know it would be ok IP: Logged |
