Generally the biggest problem with clams is people add copper based meds to the water and kill them. Clams are effective at removing detritus from the tank, which will help lower overall ammonia and nitrates produced, but you'll still have to do regular water changes. Basically, they're insurance against overfeeding, etc. Other things to watch is they require a certain amount of calcium to grow and maintain their shell. If you have very soft, or somewhat acidic water conditions you may have to provide a source of calcium. I'm skepticle about how big a problem it is as I've never personally seen it (and snails live in peat bogs), but apparently it can happen. IP: Logged |
