NONE! I cannot emphasize enough the impossibility of keeping a healthy goldfish in a 1 gallon tank. Those 50 cent feeder fish (common or comets) can grow 12"+ long and live 20-25+ years. Even fancy varieties can grow 7-8" and are extremely thick bodied fish (think softball like). Also, due to GF's digestive system they produce much greater waste than other fish of a similar size. Therefore you need 2-3 gallons of water per inch of fish (30 gallon for 1) at full size. I have mine in a much smaller tank now, but I did it realising that I'd have to upgrade when they reached 3-5". Although fish stores make piles of money off of 1/2 and 1 gallon tanks - there isn't much that can be kept in them - except maybe Betta's, but even then it's none too big. My advice is to exchange it for a 2-3 gallon and get a betta. [This message has been edited by katanas_edge (edited 02-20-2004).] IP: Logged |

I couldn't agree more with what Katana said. IMO, 1 gallons are pretty much worthless. The only thing I use mine for is as a short term quarantine for my ADF's if I have to treat the tank with non-frog-safe meds, or to grow fry out a little. I used to have a betta in it, but after a few weeks of him looking really cramped, I transferred him to a 10 gallon. -Chelle IP: Logged |

It doesn't sound like you've bought them yet, so I would recommend tetras for your 10 gallon. You can a fair number of tetras in a 10 gallon and they're easier on plants etc. if you wanted to plant them. IP: Logged |
