I have a betta who's very intelligent. He eats out of my hand and is responsive to anything going on in "the outside world." Some of the time he seems rather bored. Is there anything you would reccomend to spice up my bettas life? IP: Logged |

ive seen a lot of people that think there betta is board if hes in a small tank i would get him in a 10 gallon with a filter and a heater and if its a female betta i would put some tropical community fish if its a male you shouldn't put it in with anything else but a female betta IP: Logged |

I agree with Red Devil about getting a bigger tank. However, there's actually quite a few fish that male bettas can be kept with. You just have to avoid really brightly colored fish, those with long fins, and in general most gouramis. And it's also not a good idea to keep male & female bettas together. If one wants to mate and the other doesn't, they will kill eachother. -Chelle IP: Logged |

My female betta is in a 55-gallon tank (along with others) and although she stays far away from the current and air curtain she just swims back and forth in the front all day long. Occasionally the red-tailed shark will chase her around. I would have to agree with red devil and t_chelle, after moving her from a smaller set-up to a bigger one, she seems to be much more livlier. my red tailed shark chases some other fish but most of the time the bettas the one chasing him ( she has little on the bottem of the tank in a decaration that she likes to hang out in and so does he so she always winds up chasing him ) can you belive i had a red tailed shark so aggresive once i had to put him in with my cichlids ( there was an red devil in there also ) and he actually fought with them i wound up having to give him away because of space he got 10 inches and i didn't have enough space in my tank so he had to go along with a jack dempsey and a pike don't worry i gave him to a good friend of mine and he has really healthy fish im actually jelus IP: Logged |

I have always kept my bettas in my community tanks. Over the years I have never had a betta that seemed bored. They generally outswim most of the tetras! I have never had a betta that has shown any aggression towards anything but his own shadow either. My males have tended to just swim past the ladies and not even notice them. But, my mom's betta terrorizes her tank so I guess it's just the temperment of the individual fish. If he's in a big enough home I would recommend getting him some friends, he might just be lonely. Put a small hand mirror next to his bowl so he can see his reflection. He will think it is another male betta and flare his gill coverings and fins, posture and get agitated. It is fun to watch, gives him something to do, and does no harm. IP: Logged |
