Hey all I was just wondering if coloring the glass of your light does any harm to the fish or plants in the tank.I saw in the 'what everyone looks like' post t_chelle had done this and thought it looked interesting, so I just wanted to know before I did it.And if there are any colors you should stay away from. Also does anyone know about using theatre gel for lights to color the tank?

I was wondering about this too, so i'd like to add some more to this question. ^^

I've heard that black lights aren't good for fishes eyes, does anyone know about that?

t chelle later post says that she jsut use a blue sharpy marker on the glass ABOVE the water adding a blue tint witch is not a black lite! i also was wondering about the black light but KCv5n said that it burns out the fished retna. Im not sure if the blue light will efect plang growth but if you have a duel florecent lighting system you could coulor out 1 side so you get good regular lighting and the blue tint as well just make sure thier is no way of the ink to leach into the water!! owther wise id say its ok
I know who your are fabbyfish !!! scard!! muhahahaha see ya tomarrow!! hee hee

There is NO scientific proof of black light damaging the eyes of any auqalife or marine life.

I own a 300 gallon Reef tank and I use three 400watt MH bulbs as well as two 36" NO blacklights on at night for Moon effect.

they are very effective and provide the fish with a natural surounding.

As for coloring your bulbs why not just buy the Hagen Marine glo bulbs and put them in or any other actinic bulb you can find.

Hope this helps

Hi matty, Here is a link regarding UV lighting that might clear this up for you. http://www.drbrucecoward.com/EyeCare/uvlight.htm

Partial context:
Ultraviolet Light Can Cause Eye Damage

Disease is not the only factor that can result in eye damage. Ultraviolet (UV) light, which emanates from the sun and is also generated by sun lamps, can damage the eyes when too much exposure occurs. Certain types of UV light are known to cause cataracts and also can damage the cornea.

Of the three types of ultraviolet light (UVA, UVB and UVC), the greatest risk is from UVB. Overexposure to UVB can damage the cornea, producing photokeratitis. Photokeratitis, which results when the cornea has been irritated by overexposure to light, requires the eyes to be bandaged until vision returns to normal (usually several days).
In addition to suspecting a connection between UVB and UVA light and lens cataract formation, many scientists believe that long-term exposure to UVA light may be related to the loss of visual faculty that accompanies old age.
