Hi chipper, By Painted Turtle, I believe you are refferring to a Red Eared Slider. Painted Turtle is a common name given to Sliders because they used to paint designs on top of the shell of juvenile (1") Sliders. Anyway, if you look at the bottom of the shell the females shell is perfectly smooth across the bottom. On the males shell it will have a slight indentation in the center. Hope this helps.
