My red tail is hanging out upside down between the heater and the side of the tank. He just relaxes there. Any reason why he might be doing this?

Sounds like it could be swim bladder problems. Does he have problems swimming other times (have to struggle to keep from floating to the top or do barrel rolls while swimming)? Does he look bloated? Has he been defecating?

If it is swim bladder, I would try not feeding him for a few days. If that doesn't help, try feeding him a shelled pea (microwave a frozen pea for a few seconds and remove the shell). And if all else fails, you can try adding some epsom salt (1tsp/5 gallons). But don't use the salt if you have any scaleless fish.

Nope it is not swim bladder. If he is not there, he is just swimming as normal. He just seems to prefer to hang out there. And he is scouting the bottom for food too.

I've had lots of fish prefer to hang behind the heater. esp plecos. I guess it's a good hiding spot, nice and dark. does he have a log or something else to hide inside?

Okay. If he's acting fine otherwise and looks good, I wouldn't worry too much.
