Hi, I'm new here and was wondering if anyone could provide some helpful info. My DD is having an awful time setting up her tank. Actually, since she's only 7, I'm doiong the work!LOL Anyway, I checked the water conditions, and the Amonia level is 0 and nitrate and nitrite are barely elevated. It is a 10 gallon tank that we set up th first of the year, so the cycling part should be done, shouldn't it? Everything was fine until I got her some guppies friday. 4 out of 5 are dead now along with her older male guppy, a baby that she had raised, and her corycat. All of this happened since Saturday morning. She has 2 mystery snails. Also, will mystery snails kill guppies? She has 2 very active ones, but she has lost fish since I took them out so evidently they aren't the problem. I am on the way to the pet store with the dead and a water sample, but welcome any advice anyone might have. I have a very upset little girl on my hands! Thanks. IP: Logged |

hay i think i now your problem because i have raised guppy s for 15 years so i think it is either the temp. remember temp must be at least 77 through 89 they are tropical fish and don't worry the snails are a must because of waist and also what kind of filtration do you have . another could be because of filtration IP: Logged |

The problem is probably the nitrites I don't like to see any on my tests that means your tank is not done cycling or you had a spike. The nitrates are not dangerous at lower levels as long as they don't sky rocket that's fine. Maybe you added too many fish at once. How many fish did you add and how many were used to cycle the tank? What you can do now before you add any more fish do a 25% water change and test it again. The watere change should dilute the nitrites. Let us know! ------------------ IP: Logged |

Thanks for your quick replys! I just got back from the pet store and they just checked my water again. The nitrates or nitrites(now I can't remember!) were a little elevated, so I'll do another partial change tonight. They said that it probably wasn't through cycling yet. How long does that take? As far as filtration goes, I have the one that came with the tank at WalMart. I added 5 guppies to the tank that day. She already had 3 and a couple of cory cats and algea eaters. I was afraid it was a little overloaded. I guess you live and learn! I am getting into this a little too deep, now. We have set up 3 10gal tanks this year. IP: Logged |

Update: remaining new guppy has had (or we have saved) 15-20 babies. We have a breeder box that we've put the babies in and are watching her for any more. Any secrets to keeping the babies alive? IP: Logged |

All I've ever done is feed my guppy fry crushed flakes and wait until they are too big for the adults to eat before releasing them into the tank. -Chelle IP: Logged |
