My wife scored a job in another city about 5 hours (driving) from Austin so we will be moving this summer. We have 5 (!) fish tanks ranging from 5 gal up to 75 gal. Has anyone had experience moving fish? How did you handle it? Any replies would be most welcome! Thanks! IP: Logged |

Yes the first time I moved three tanks and lost one fish. The second time I moved 8 tanks and lost no fish. I found the last time that it's alot better for the fish if you can save as much water as possible. Not sure if that possible on a 5 hr. drive. I only went about .5 hr. each time. What I did the second time was get as many five gal. buckets as I had room for and saved water in them. I got mine from white castle cheap and rinsed them realy well. They also double as a good container for transporting the fish. Also I kept the filters wet and warm as close to the normal tank temp. as possible. Those styrofoam ice chests come in really handy too. When you cover them up, it'll keep your fish from jumping out and the darkness will help them too. Put some plastic or real plants in with the fish and they wont be so shocked. I think it is also important to remove all of the substrate from the bigger tanks, as it can be quite heavy and could break the glass during a move. Get lots of help and be patient. Good Luck!
