I have recently noticed that my tank water has started to turn green and be very cloudy, I don't know what would cause this problem, if you could help that would be great...thank you IP: Logged |

Do a large water change then continue with frequent normal water changes until it clears up. Is the tank by a window or do you leave your lights on all the time? This will speed up the production of algea giving you this problem. Also not doing water changes on a regular basis can have the same effect. ------------------ [This message has been edited by gr8fuljames (edited 02-16-2004).] IP: Logged |

gr8fuljames is correct; it is algae bloom. The two main things algae needs to survive are nutrients and light. You can decrease those by not leaving the light on as long and make sure you aren't overfeeding your fish (anything the fish don't eat is just feeding the algae). And more frequent water changes to get rid of all that extra food will also help. -Chelle IP: Logged |

Well I do leave my tank light on a lot, what hours should I have it on for, how long do you usually leave yours on? And okay, I have a 6 inch pleco, a 3 inch iridescent shark, and bout 35 small small newly born convict babies, how much should I feed them...and another question is, i plan on gettin rid of my convicts by either flushing them down the toilet or something and was wondering what else would go really good with the iridescent shark....i was thinkin' a bala, and either 3 quarry cats, or a pictus cat or something like that.... What size tank do you have? I have the same problem and was told my fish had grown enough to over populate the tank. I have 29 gallon with just about 15 fish in it now all about 1 inch or so. I also found a place that told me to change about 20-25per cent of the water out daily untill the green water went away and then do it twice every week after that. IP: Logged |

I generally leave my tank lights on for about 8 hours. Also, DO NOT flush live fish down the toilet. That is very inhumane. You can either leave them in the tank and let the other fish eat them or ask around and see if a LFS would be willing to buy (or just take) them. What size is your tank? Unless it's several hundred gallons, I would get rid of the irridescent shark. They can get over 4 feet long, are very hyperactive, and prefer to be in groups so they really aren't suited for aquarium (IMO pet stores shouldn't even sell them). I also would avoid balas for pretty much the same reasons. They don't get quite as big (14"), but are still very active and prefer large groups. -Chelle IP: Logged |
