HI, Can anyone let me know the life span of Discus, I had a pair of Blue Discus since 1 & 1/2 month without any problem but lost one yesterday night, I did not find any misbehaviour with the fish. I do a 10% water change every day. The Nitrate and ammonia are kept to a very minimal level, These 2 are in a 60G custom made tank. Also please let me know what are the recommended food for these. I used to feed him Blood worms and small Shrimps. Thanks in Advance IP: Logged |

Here's a site that I ran across with alot of basic info for discus. http://members.aol.com/bgdiscus/ I know they will eat both the bw and the shrimp but you need a basic staple food for the primary diet. The bw's can cause parasites but provide good nutrition. The shrimp is good for cleaning out their digestive track but provides very little nutrition. But you should be able to find some good examples on this site. ------------------ IP: Logged |

First of all, sorry about your loss. I know that the discus requires very soft water and a stable acidic ph. The breeders will use peat in the substrate or filters to achieve these water parameters. Many times the LFS will fail to tell the buyer this, and the fishes will die in a few months time. None of the LFS in my area will carry the discus as the water here is alcaline and very hard. HI James and Hooben, I have had Peat moss in my filter but i am still not sure why he died, I have now got a new discus guy as a mate to my other discus from my local pet store, hope he stays well in his new home. IP: Logged |

You should go back to the store where you bought them and ask for their ph reading and what they are feeding them. They are carnivorous, so I would think that some type of pellet might do the trick. There are some pellets that sink and others that float. It just depends where the fishes like eating. You might also try frozen foods such as bloodworms. Don't forget to give them plenty of tall plants to hide in. Anyways, good luck. IP: Logged |

Thanks Hooben, Now i know the reason why my discuss died, They require an acidic PH but the PH at my pet store was at around 7.8 hence this casuality i think. But please let me know if you have any info why did he not die when i changed its environment to acidic. ( ~ 6.8 ) is a sudden change a problem. My Pet stor lost all the discuss which was in that alkaline tank. IP: Logged |

Yes, with all fishes a sudden ph change can be a problem. I have read many books that state that if a constant ph cannot be kept, then do not attempt to adjust it. In other words, the wrong ph is better than a constantly changing ph. Unfortunately the discus will probably die in both an unstable ph, and the wrong ph. That is why my local FS will not carry the discus at all. It's unfortunate, as the discus is one of the most beautiful fishes that I have ever seen. IP: Logged |
