It all depends on the genetics of the fish. Some are able to interbreed while other's are not. And just because 2 fish are in the same family (or genus for that matter), it doesn't necessarily mean they can breed.

A lot of african cichlids can cross as well as some species of south american cichlids. But at the moment, I can't think of any other fish like tetras or gouramis that are capable of interbreeding.

Oh, and just so you know, hybridization can be a very touchy subject. I've actually seen a person who had a hybrid fish get told they should kill it immediately just because it was a hybrid.

The main argument against it that I've heard is you are taking away from the original strains. There are so many different species of fish out there, we don't need man-made ones.

My own personal opinion is as long as they don't end up deformed in a way that is detrimental to the fish and they don't get released into the wild, I don't think it's that big of a deal.
