I want one red eared slider, how often should I feed it? what type of fish are considered as feeder fish? how deep should the water be? do feeder fish really carry disease? are there any foods to avoid specifically? Just looking for pointers before I get it.

well for a RES its kinda hard easy at first but they get 12inchs and require alot of water and space ...!!!... maybe look into a smaller turtle like a mississippi map they only get 4-6 inches and perfect for a 55 gal tank but i love RES for feeding them first
how old is ur RES younger need higher fat like fish and shrimp
and if its 4 years old or around 4-5 inches+ lay off the feederfish and shrimp and all that other nonsense and start a fruit and veggie diet find the stuff he likes and then start a weekly diet so it changes according to the diffrent days so your turtle doesnt get bored... while doing this if you have any plecos or any fish you wish to keep take them out cuz the turtle might be looking for other foods then what you give him for a few months... also you might want to look into mystery snails or apple snails they will clean up all the mess the turtle will make and really really good filters i have 2 and i need to get another one or 2 so i dont have to clean as often also... basking area you need a nice sized area for him to bask

i have a 55 gallon with a 6-7 inch RES and i have something like this setup for him http://www.austinsturtlepage.com/Habitat/baskingspot.htm
also check out www.turtletimes.com
good dedicated turtle forum
