From what I know Eheim makes the best canister filter. Heard people who have used them for decades without having a problem. They are a little pricey though.

Rena Filstar XP3 is also a very good canister filter. They are not loud and they are very easy to put under your stand.

I would recommend buying them online as they usually are less than half the price as they are at most LFS

I have a Penn Plax Cascade 1200 (315gph) on my 75 gallon and the 700 (185 gph) on my 55. They're not a major brand name so you hardly ever hear anything about them, but I really love mine. Easy to set up and pretty quiet.

Hi t_chelle, Years ago Penn Plax was one of the top manufacturers of aquarium products. They decided to go the same route as Hartz with the chain stores like Walmart. After that there wasn't much product development. Probably the reason you don't see their products as often.

Of the 4 LFS's in the area (all mom & pop places), only one of them carries canisters (or any filter other than Whisper for that matter) and all they have are Cascade, so that's how I ended up with them. But I do really like them and have never had any problem.

For media, all I use are the black sponges that came with the filters, some gravel in a bag (left over from when I switched to sand in the tanks) for added surface area, and some white filter floss. Most of the LFS's here sell sheets of the filter floss that are about 12" x 18" and you can cut it to the correct size for the filter trays. However, I've recently started using quilt batting instead because it's a lot cheaper and works just as well (I just make sure it's non-toxic).

Hey pacuguy, don't forget that you can save some money by buying your cannister filter online. I find that my LFS always inflates the prices on cannisters. Check into it, maybe it will save you some money. My fluval 404 is very quiet and has lasted a very long time.

I dont like fluval. They fail way too freakin often One day, after your electric goes out, your fluval will not start, and even possibly get hot enough to melt the top
