I have a 29 gallon tank and it has been setup for about a year with very clear water. About 2 months ago I did a water change of about 25 percent and the water stayed just cloudy for a couple of days then turned green. About 3 weeks ago I changed nearly all the water out and put fresh in and the Tank stayed crystal clear for about a week and done the same thing again. I keep the lights off now. I have tried the algae products like algae fix and algae destroyer but with no avail. Any Suggestions? Thanks IP: Logged |

What kind/size of fish do you have? Changing all of the water is generally a bad idea as it disrupts the balance of ammonia and nitrite reducing bacteria and can cause the tank to "recycle". In a well balanced tank you shouldn't have to change more than 20-25% per week. As it was fine for a year, I'm guessing that the fish have probably grown to the point that the tank is overstocked. thanks for your reply. I have about 15 fish in the tank. Mainly tetras with two angelfish and a chinese algae eater and a Pleco. I had two red finned sharks but lost both of them this week. The tank did start to recycle or though it seemed to but it turned green within a couple of days. There isnt any algae growing on anything just the green water. IP: Logged |
