Take the pacu back where you bought it and get something else. Pacus get too big for a 55 gal tank.

Scar: Can the pacu....way too big for tank...neons are really neat in a heavily planted tank...there are also several different colors to choose from...check out the site www.aquariumfish.net it is really helpful on what breeds go together (you can also purchase fish through them) but they are really informative on tankmates. Good luck and let us know what you pick

I wouldn't recommend the black light. I'm no expert on aquatic plants (I've only managed to keep 3 somewhat alive ), but I believe they require more of the yellow & red spectrum. Plus I have a friend with some glow fish and he says the black light really freaks out his other fish.

And yes, neon tetras tend to be less hardy than other tetras. Like Cichlids small Jaws suggested, cardinal tetras are a good substitute because they have a very similar coloration and only get a little larger than neons.

i just returned the pacu and in substitution picked up 4 gourami ( spelled phonetically )... the man at the store said its a good rule of thumb to have the number of fish in a tank is 1 gallon for every inch the fish are...is that true..in that case i have a bit more room to add fish cause the 4 gourami are SUPPOSEDLY dwarf gouramis'...any suggestions????

The 1 gallon/inch of ADULT fish applies to thin bodied fish like tetras, danios, and barbs. And IMO, for most gouramis if you allow 2 gallons /inch, you should be fine.

Dwarf gouramis only get about 2" so yes, you can get a few more fish.

do you have any suggestions as to what i may look at to add to this tank? i want fish that have distinctive coloring and bright colors also i bought some flag stone and constructed 2 sets of caves in the tank so i want to get some fish that might take advantage of these caves as well...i was thinking maybe some catfish or placo (which i hear are related to catfish...)

Hi, I do NOT recommend the use of a black light on any aquarium. The UV light from a black light is known to destroy the optic nerve and will eventually cause your fish to go blind. Those who are famaliar with UV sterilizers used to kill bacteria and is somewhat effective in killing out ick, know that the bulb in a UV sterilizer is a black light.

A pictus cat will love the caves as will clown loaches (very fun to watch and colorful) and I also saw some blue flame tetras today when I was at the pet store. They were beautiful, they had red fins a bluish silver body and big blue stripe on their back. Also, guppies are very colorful and in my experience do well with cardinal tetras. I've never been able to keep a neon alive more than a month or so but cardinals have never been a problem for me. Good luck.
