I have decided to upgrade my filter system to a RENA FILSTAR XP3. I have never used a canister system before and I have questions regarding the different media options available. How should I set the RENA FILSTAR XP3 up to achieve maximum results. I have a 55g tank with live plants (cabomba, rotala, and sword) and the tank currently holds 4 dwarf gouramis, 4 platies, 4 red skirt tetras, 3 black skirt tetras, 2 cory cats, 4 small clown loaches and 1 small plecos. Thanks for all responses! Scott IP: Logged |

Scott, I use a Rena Filstar XP2 on one of my tanks. The XP3 should come with all the filter media you need to get started. Mine came with three different levels of mechanical filtration (30 ppi, 20 ppi, and micro filtration), a bio-chemzorb (carbon) pillow, and a liter of ceramic rings for a biological filtration bed. The XP3 has three seperate compartments. Mine only has two. Most extra filter media is usually used to harden (coral sand) or soften (peat moss) the water based on your fishes needs. some media removes phosphates and nitrates/nitrites. Rena also makes ceramic stars to build a bio bed as well. check out: http://www.aquatichouse.com/FILTRATION%20MENU_files/FilStar%20Media.asp for more info on filter media for Rena. good choice [This message has been edited by LeeTron (edited 02-11-2004).] IP: Logged |
