I am starting out as a new fish person. I will be getting an Africian Chiclid and a sucker fish from a friend. The are both more than 6 years old. Can I add new small fish to the tank and how do I know what temp to keep the water and what chemicals do I add to the new tank?

What species of african cichlid is it? If you don't know, can you post a pic or describe it? What size is the tank?

I'll need to know the answers to those 2 questions before recommending any fish for tankmates.

The only chemical you should need to add is dechlorinator and you should add that to any new tap water you put in the tank. And your temp should be around 78* - 80*.

I also recommend buying test kits for ammonia, nitrIte, and nitrAte.

Are you getting the tank and filter that they have been using? Or will you be setting up a completely new tank?

I'm told it is a Brown African Chiclid. About 5 inches in length. Her tank-mate now is a sucker fish about 7 inches in length. I should not say her, because I don't know if they are male or female. The tank they are in now is 20 gallon and quite disgusting. I guess you could say I am saving them. I bought a new tank 30 gallon with new filter and the works. I hope they don't go into shock with the new water.
Let me know what else you need to know. Thanks for the help.

"Brown african cichlid" doesn't really tell me much. A scientific name or pic would be better.

Before adding the fish, you will need to cycle the new tank. There is some good info on fishless cycling here: http://www.tomgriffin.com/aquamag/cycle2.html

Or, if they are the only fish currently in the 20 gallon, see if your friend will let you borrow that filter for about 2 weeks. Then you can put the fish in the 30 gallon immediately and run both filters. The bacteria in the 20 gallon filter will take care of the ammonia while bacteria colonizes the new filter. After about 2 weeks, there should be enough bacteria on the new filter to handle the bioload of the tank and you can return the other filter to your friend.
