After reading numerous posts...I have come to the conclusion that even 1 oscar in a 55 gallon would probably make me a terrible pet owner. So, any suggestions on another set up that would work in a 55 gallon. I would like fish that are larger than my current platties and corys just for something different. What about Blue Rams...that is if I could ever find any in my area. The selection here is not the best. Suggestions? IP: Logged |

How much bigger? Are your current fish already in the tank or is it empty? There is a wide variety of Central/South American and African cichlids to choose from. Adult sizes of anywhere from 2" - 10". Some are very pretty and have lots of "personality" too. However, I don't think that keeping a lone Oscar in a 55gal makes you a terrible fish owner. Everyone on this forum is in agreement that a 55gal is minimum OK for one O. Maybe not optimum, but enough for the fish to live and grow comfortably. Oscars are great fish and are the most "interactive" (mine is watching me right now, wondering if I have food). I wouldn't deny myself the pleasure of owning one of these water dogs if I had an empty 55 gal laying around just begging to be stocked. Let us know what you decide. IP: Logged |

african chiclids Hi idgaf15, Please watch the language. This is a family forum with young readers. Thank you. [This message has been edited by kc5gvn (edited 02-10-2004).] IP: Logged |

If you wanted an Oscar I think you'd be OK. A 55 is the minimum for him to survive, but the minimum for him to grow to his full size and live a full healthy life. And idgaf, is it really so hard to think of another adjective? [This message has been edited by katanas_edge (edited 02-10-2004).] IP: Logged |

I'd also like to say that the majority of people who make these mistakes aren't bad, uncaring people - just misinformed or perhaps to impulsive. It's the people that have been told again and again and still insist on cramming their fish into little tanks that get to me. IP: Logged |

I think a 55 is a perfect size for african cichlids. They're just about the most colorful freshwater fish you can get, have great personalities, and depending on the species, you can fit quite a few in a 55 gallon. -Chelle IP: Logged |
