In my opionon the type that u use that has a bio wheel is the best. It provides good mechanical and the best biological filtration possible.
Biolocigal in my opionon is most important. You can always scoop out uneaten food and do maintentance W/C's but your fish can't survive without the bio filter.

I've only used sponge, HOB's, undergravel, and canister filters. But of those, by far my favorites are canisters. They are very efficient, quiet, and can be tucked away in the tank stand. But, as far as cost in concerned, I think it would be overkill to have one on anything smaller than a 40 gallon.

but the filters i use are mencanacal and over a short period of time become highly bacterial but if you dont want to wait they have biological filter cartages for that filter also they have ammonia remover so i kind of still think the one i use is the best

My canister filters have several trays in them so I can use whatever media I want. Anything you can put in an HOB filter, I can put in a canister. The reason canister filters are more efficent is because they hold a lot more media than an HOB.

BTW, I would avoid chemical filtration (ammonia removers) because in the long run it can hurt the tank. Things like ammonia removers will be eating up some of the ammonia that should be taken care of by the bacteria. If you ever stop using them, the bacteria colonies won't be sufficient to handle the bioload of the tank and it will go through a mini cycle.
