Hello! -- I have 5 females, and 3 male guppies; I know about 3-4 of them are pregnant. (Just got them the other day, already pregnant when I bought them) I have a breeding box but, how do I tell when they should be put in there? I have one that has a blackish gravid spot; compared to the others that have a very dark brown. Does the gravid spot have some significance in when they will birth?

The first time my daughter had her guppy tank, she decided on using the breeding box. Soon upon its use, the pregnant female went into shock and died. I assume it was the confined space. A better alternative is to provide a well planted area (either real or plastic plants) where the newborn babies can hide. Place plants thick and close together all in the same general area. Once they are ready, the babies will emerge from the planted area. If you do opt for the breeding box, keep a close eye on the fish. When my guppy had babies, since I knew she could stress out, I took all of the other ones out into a fishbowl, and as the babies were born, caught them and put them in the breeding box until they were big enough to be released. Had to clean the poop out of there every other day though, it accumulates fast! IP: Logged |

I would not put her in the fry trap as it can cause stress and might cause a miscarriage or even kill her instead I would try and get some thick live plants so they have shelter from the other fish this is what I do with my I all mine I also leave the lights on 24/7 cause breeding happens more frequently ever 3 weeks apposed to ever 4 weeks Hope this helps Fish Addict Fish Addict

whenever i have found my guppies to be pregnant then i put her strait into the breeding box. i have never had one dye on me in there. wash the box with hot hot water incase ther is any disease in it and put her in and lots of lush plants. i suggest java ferns and some algea. then when she does have the babies then she wont be ably to eat them that easily and take her out as quik as possible. but dont put her in until her stomack is really big.
