My daughter has successfully bred fancy guppies in a 29 gallon tank with only an undergravel filter system. She also raises ghost shrimp in the same tank. She learned that a powerful filter will sometimes suck baby guppies up the filter tube. She uses a power filter on one uplift tube and does a careful 20 percent water change every 2 weeks.

As hooben mentioned before the problem with the filters many breeders rely on sponge filters. There great for biological filters but it puts more work on you because there not so great mechanicaly. This means scooping out uneaten food and siphoning out waste almost daily. usualy done with a smaller tube than normal to reduce the amount of water taken out. Another plus to the sponge filter is small particales of food will stick to the sponge and the babies will pick it off.

Actually they do live in an unheated tank. My baby guppies seem fine without a heater.

It actually depends on what the ambient temperature of the room is. If the tank can stay pretty stable somewhere between 76* - 80* the guppies should be fine without a heater. However, most of the time this is not the case so that's why I suggested a heater. And it's a good idea to have a heater anyway, just in case the room temp does drops significantly for some reason.

The tank in my bedroom stays pretty constantly at 79* w/o the heater turning on, but every once in a while (like last night), my room will get cold enough for the heater to kick on.
