Hi everybody. I have been having a recurring fungus problem in my 20 gallon tank for a few months now. Once I clear it up it comes back again in 1-2 weeks after I have stopped treating the tank. I did add some new fish but none of these fish have had the fungus on them. So far I have lost 1 betta, 4 neon dwarf rainbows, and now 2 harlequin rasboras have it on them. I am medicating with melafix again, it seems to be the only thing that will get rid of it. Does anyone know what causes this? I looks like white cottony fuzz on the gills and fins of the fish. I am very good about tank maintenance and also have lots of live plants. Any ideas?? Thanks lots!!! IP: Logged |

Never even heard of it. The selection in the pet stores around my area isn't that great. And they tend to charge outrageous prices on things because they have no competition. Most often I'm at Wal-Mart getting stuff even though I hate it. Thanks! IP: Logged |

I only have one artificial piece of wood, been there 5 months and 8 live plants that have been there for just as long. I am still treating with melafix (haven't gotten to go shopping for new meds yet- have to wait until payday) this is the third day and the fungus hasn't progressed yet but it hasn't started going away either. The water is also getting very cloudy because I had to remove my filter. Any other suggestions? Thanks again! IP: Logged |

I am on day six of my treatment and the fungus is starting to look better. I just have one last question: Should I replace my filter cartridge or get a new one? Because I am wondering if that cartridge might have some of the fungus "disease" on it. I'm not sure if it works that way but I don't want to take any chances. Anyone know where the fungus comes from in the first place? Thanks IP: Logged |

Don't completely replace your filter media because you will be losing all the nitrifying bacteria and the tank will cycle again (which could kill the fish). If you're treating the tank with a fungicide, it will also be going through the filter so I wouln't worry about changing the media. -Chelle IP: Logged |
