I always highly discourage the use of feeder fish. They do exponentially more harm than good. 1. Poor nutritional value over a high-quality pelleted food. If I had to have feeders (and I have), I'd grow my own, which I did. You can set yourself up with convicts and have a constant stream of "Known-Safe" feeders. Barring that, ANY fish you place in your tank will increase the likelyhood of disease.. So from a professional standpoint - I can't recommend one over the other. IP: Logged |

Really though feeders are fun for you and your fish. A 10 inch Oscar loves to gooble up some feeders. Just look at the tank you get the feeeders from if you see a lot of dead ones or obvious ICH. Don't buy them. If everyone is swimming and happy make yourself happy and your fish feed them up. IP: Logged |

Just because feeders don't LOOK sick, it doesn't mean they aren't. I used to give my oscars feeders too. Then one time I ended up with a batch of perfectly healthy looking feeders that the oscars gobbled up. The next day there were worm in the tank that were burrowing into my oscars' heads. IMO, feeder fish just aren't worth the risk. If you want to give your oscars live food, try things like earthworms, meal worms, and other insects. Personally, I raise a small type of crustacean called a triop and give those to my oscars as occasional treats. -Chelle IP: Logged |
