Hi all, I just noticed that one of my guppies, has white spots up and down her body and fins and one of her eyes is cloudy. She also has some red color behind her fin that was not there before. She has also begun staying close to the bottom and not swimming as much as she used to.The other guppy and two platties that live with her are fine and show no signs of sickness.Could anyone tell me what is wrong with her and what I should do to help it?Thanks.

she probably has ick or fungus, this can be treated with fungus plus, or other things that make it go away. ask the person who works at your nearest pet store. but it might be too late to save the guppy, but try anyway. hope it goes away

Sounds like your fish might have ick (white specks like grains of salt) and a secondary fungal infectio (cotton eye). You should treat your tank for ick if it fits this description as the tank is infected and your other fish will likely get it eventually unless you do.

First of all, are the white spots small (like grains of salt) or larger?

Ich is a parasite. A lot of people believe that it is always present in the water and only appears when the fish is stressed or has a weakend immune sytsem. Personally, I don't agree. I think it is brought in by an infected fish and once you treat it and if you havn't added any more fish, you shouldn't get it again (this has been my experience anyway).

One of the simplest ways to cure ich is to slowly raise the temperature to about 84* and add aquarium salt (1 tbsp per 10 gallons). But keep in mind that the salt will stay in the water so only dose the tank once and if you do a water change, only add enough additional salt to cover the amount of new water you add. After the last ich spot is gone, wait another week then do a fairly large water change to get rid of the salt.

The white spots are small like salt. And the redness behind her fin seems to spreading.I bought Ick Away which was all that was available at the store here.I just treated it today so here's hoping. Thanks for the info Chelle.

The red sounds like it could be a bacterial infection. I would recommend Maracyn 2, but I'm not entirely sure if it can be used with Ich Away.

I feel compelled to chime in on this one. T_Chelle gave you some excellent advice I'd like to expound on.

You can do this two ways...

1. Treat the ich using the Ick Away, wait for the treatment period to end and then treat for the internal bacterial infection with Maracyn-2. I would not try to use both together. No empirical research has been done to show what possible side affects may be garnered by mixing these two meds. One good thing about all the meds from Mardel Labs (Maracyn, Maracyn-2, Maroxy, etc) is that not only do they NOT affect the biological filter, they can freely be used simultaneously in any combination. The same cannot be said for the other 99% of the meds on the market today.

2. Treat the Ich using the Salt/high-temp method T_Chelle outlined and simultaneously treat the bacterial infection with Maracyn-2. The salt and elevated temperatures should have NO adverse reactions. The only point I'd like to stress is that once you raise the temperature up to 84-86 degrees, you lower the amount of available oxygen in the water so if at all possible - try to throw an extra airstone or powerhead to agitate the surface of the water.

Thanks to all who replied. As I said I treated the tank yesterday afternoon and by this afternoon, I was suprised to see the guppy much more active than she had been the past couple of days and the white spots have pretty much dissapeared and so has the redness by her fin.So thanks again guys.
