Since they are insectivores in the wild that gives us some insight into what they'd prefer. It's a common misconception that they are carnivores - although they ARE carnivorous. I usually treat them to worms, crickets, grasshoppers, beetles, cicadas, krill, beefheart, whitefish, shrimp and prawns.. IP: Logged |

You CAN, but should not use feeders. They introduce disease, are nutritionally limited, contribute to poor water quality and are not required. Being insectivores, Oscars would appreciate a fat cricket far more than a feeder fish. If you want to give feeders, breed them yourself. Try convicts.. The little water rabbits will give you an endless supply.. IP: Logged |

"I feed my oscar chopped up raw bacon andhe loves it." Oscars are incapable of properly digesting terrestrial animals so they should not be given things like ground beef, pork, and chicken. Those things contain way too much fat so they are not healthy for fish. (beefheart being the exception since it has almost no fat content). The absolute best diet for an oscar would be a good quality pelleted food like Hikari or New Life Spectrum. They are designed to provide an oscar with a proper balanced diet. If you feed the pelleted food as a staple, then an occasional treat (like once a week) of earthworms, crickets, shrimp, etc is fine. And to add to Dvross's list of why feeder fish are bad: Oscars can't properly digest scales. So most of the time they are expelled throught the gills and litter up the tank and make the water dirty. Plus, if a large number of scales are swallowed, they can cause an intestinal blockage and end up killing the oscar. -Chelle IP: Logged |
